Burundi Sewing Project

Three years ago we started hand sewing projects in Burundi. We taught women the skills to repair their families' clothing and those of local orphans.  Last year, we were able to purchase 8 sewing machines for one village, thanks to some really amazing friends!!! We hired a tailor for lessons and you can see the women’s amazing work in the pictures. I am raising funds to purchase 30 more sewing machines to continue this work and fund 2 additional projects. Most of the machines will be pedal powered, but some will be  electric machines, for women who have access to electricity.  This will allow them to learn to create more advanced designs, which will increase their ability to provide for their families.

We will also be purchasing needles, charcoal irons, charcoal,  sewing tables, measuring tapes, pins, chalk, fabric, needles, scissors,  the assembly of the machines, chairs, lessons from an accomplished tailor... in short, everything to equip them for sewing and success!  The pedal powered machines and supplies are about $100.00 and the electric model kit runs about $160.00.

What an opportunity to change lives forever with a purchase these ladies simply could not afford on their own.  Recent world-wide events have had a devastatingly effect on Burundi’s economy, as you can well imagine. Where as we, in America,  have had the benefit of economic bailouts, unemployment benefits, and furloughs - they have none. These machines provide them a skill set and the means to work, not only to survive, but thrive! They learn a profession they can pass on for generations.
