Project Summary:

As an inclusive, multigenerational gathering place that fosters community, Burns Park will include a shaded programming & performance space, a unique playscape for children, public art, chess tables, benches, tables for gathering, bike parking, native plant gardens, and more. We are excited for the library to offer children's and adult programming at the park, and other programming options are in the works through various community partners, e.g. fitness classes, concerts, public gatherings, and more.

Burns Park, the first park in the city, was platted as a public square in 1852, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association is committed to preserving its historic and natural integrity. For that reason, we have designed Burns Park as a modern village square while also preserving the beautiful green space and towering tree canopy. Our neighborhood association envisions Burns Park as an inclusive space where all members of our community feel welcome and safe, no matter one's cultural identification, housing status, socioeconomic status, or otherwise.

With its central location in the Downtown Neighborhood, Burns Park serves as a bridge between the downtown residential and commercial districts. We believe a thoughtful revitalization of Burns Park will
promote the next stage of revitalization for the greater Downtown.

The Burns Park project has been driven by Downtown Neighborhood Association in partnership with City of La Crosse Parks & Recreation and River Architects. Downtown Neighborhood Association is a chapter of La Crosse Neighborhoods, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit corporation which advocates for initiatives and programs that protect, preserve and improve our city's neighborhoods for all residents.

Special thanks to our friends at the La Crosse Public Library, Washburn on the Park Apartments, Ho-Chunk Nation/Three Rivers House, Downtown Mainstreet, Inc., and Western Technical College for offering valuable support throughout the planning process. We can't wait to share this space with our community!

We would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to Park Bank for generously partnering with us to foster a more welcoming park and neighborhood.
