Burn Victim Shakeema Shuler

On November 26, 2017 Shakeema was badly burned in her kitchen. A family friend was operating a pressure cooker and without warning, the pressure cooker exploded. Steam and hot food projected all over Shakeema's face, chest and stomach area. As a result, Shakeema was hospitalized for a week. Shakeema works as a home health aide for the elderly and is unable to work until she 100% heals from her injuries. Since she has only been employed by her job for a few months, Shakeema was determined unqualified for FMLA benefits. For the first time in her life, this has left her without income to support her family. With the holiday season coming up, she really feels the burden of being the sole provider to her children and taking care of her household. At the time of this unfortunate accident, she began to have mechanical problems with her minivan. Without any income, Shakeema is unable to have her vehicle repaired as she has used her small savings to pay December rent and provide food for her boys. At this time, Shakeema is relying on friends and public transportation to run short errands and to get to the Burn Center, that is about two hours away, once a week for her skin cleaning so that she does not get an infection. If you know Shakeema, you know that she's either at work or with her two boys, ages 9 and 14, at their many after school extracurricular activities. She loves her daily duties as a single mother. Due to this unfortunate event, Shakeema is struggling to financially provide for her children as she continues to cope with the pain and healing process during this stressful time. Shakeema is trying to remain positive and isn't one to really ask for help. However, with bills adding up and Christmas around the corner, she is compelled to reach out and ask for a little help.
