Shylo Arts Detroit is a creative laboratory that was founded in 2017 in the heart of Detroit's Osborn-Fitzgerald neighborhood. Shylo came about in response to an urgent need for Black-run artistic spaces in a city whose population is over 80% Black. We believe it to be absolutely necessary to create this space due to the grossly whitewashed nature of the arts world.
In continuing to expand our reach, Shylo Arts Detroit has cultivated a partnership with Bulk Space, a collective of artists who seek to support marginalized persons in gaining equitable access to arts-based resources. As both organizations are committed to lifting up the craft of marginalized artists-- specifically women, Black folks, Indigenous people, non-Black people of color, and the LGBTQ community, we (Shylo Arts and Bulk Space) have teamed up to launch Bulk Space Artist Residency (BSAR). BSAR aims to offer local marginalized artists a platform of programming on which to present a wide range of artworks. We do this by providing individuals with resources and room to take up space, both physically and conceptually. BSAR is a fully-funded artist residency meticulously designed for creatives to receive quality resources, networks of support, and equitable compensation for their work. Each artist's residency culminates in a month-long public exhibition at Shylo Arts Detroit.
Shylo's leadership consists of marginalized artists and curators, to whom we look to inform our mission as BSAR programmers and directors. We believe this model is the cornerstone to our integrity and relationship with the surrounding community. For this reason, Shylo is the first arts space of its kind in Detroit.

While the artist network we have created through Shylo Arts and BSAR are thriving and expanding, the building itself is in need of major repairs in order for us to continue safe and dignified occupancy. Through numerous evaluations with architects and contractors, we have determined that Shylo’s roof will not withstand another Detroit winter, and must be swiftly reconstructed if the building is to remain structurally viable. Alongside roof repairs, we have an emergent need to restore its steps, create a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and install an ADA-compliant bathroom.
THE HISTORY OF SHYLO
Originally founded in 1923 as a synagogue, this building has been a sacred space in the Osborn-Fitzgerald neighborhood of Detroit, housing five different denominations throughout its years. The building was abandoned in 2012 and five years later, Shylo Arts Detroit was created. Shylo honors the legacy of spiritual connection, using the arts to reimagine and redefine power as a means of divine exchange. As a collective of diverse artists and art professionals, we recognize that the need for safe and inclusive spaces goes hand in hand with our mission to restore this historic edifice. With your help we will rebuild and reconsecrate Shylo Arts Detroit as a sacred space for artists.
OUR MISSION
With the restoration of Shylo's structural integrity, we will be creating a sanctuary for artists and curators to meaningfully engage with the community in the creation of new models of power distribution, representation, and artmaking.
Through Shylo and Bulk Space Artist Residency, our aims are as follows:
To pilot systems of collective accessibility and power that subvert current institutional inequities.
To engage the surrounding neighborhood year-round in public programming through artist-led talks, workshops, family days, and community-based activations.
To curate a space for rigorous, exploratory artmaking by historically underrepresented artists.
To support each Shylo artist in connecting meaningfully with their own identity, as well as to construct sustainable relationships with the Fitzgerald-Osborn neighborhood.
To provide access to state-of-the-art equipment with which to create high-caliber works of art.
By providing our artists and our community with necessary tools as well as a strong network of support, we aim to re-consecrate Shylo as a creative sanctuary and restore the ability this structure has to inspire and uplift.
