Building Sustainably - Jayuya, Puerto Rico

Tax deductible
This summer, our friends at Tabonuco  are working to build a hurricane-resistant, timber frame cabin called Cabaña San Pedrito, or the San Pedrito Cabin, at their home base in the mountains of Jayuya, Puerto Rico. The dream is to finish building a space that will serve as housing for volunteers, interns, and participants of Tabonuco’s educational programming  and better equip the organization for the climate challenges of 2021. Tabonuco is an ecological education focused project that primarily serves kids and youth from Puerto Rico and people from abroad to gain skills in agroecology, sustainability, creative arts and alternative construction.

Alternative Breaks Puerto Rico is asking you to support the leadership on the front lines of Climate Catastrophe in the Caribbean to build a better tomorrow! While we have to shelter in place, our solidarity can still cross borders and seas, please donate today!

In 2017, the people of Puerto Rico lived through the most violent natural disaster the island has ever known. Since that devastating day on Sept. 20th, according to the New York Times, "2,975 people died as a result of the hurricane ... 30,000 homes remain covered by blue roof tarps that were supposed to be temporary ... It’s a sense of abandonment.”

But as the debris settled from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Puerto Rican students at UC Berkeley began organizing to support their families and homeland. After a dozen individual trips to bring solar lights, tarps, batteries, and water filtration systems, in March of 2018, UC Berkeley students made the first Student Brigade journey to Puerto Rico to support community-based efforts on the ground in the vanguard of the recovery.

Alternative Breaks Puerto Rico vowed to be a part of the long-term recovery efforts on the island for a minimum of 10 years, through Student Brigade support every spring break.

After 3 years, media attention has waned, visibility has faded, but the needs and urgency have only come into sharper focus. Since the Hurricanes, Puerto Rico has been battered by a string of nearly 9,000 earthquakes, water shortages, and ongoing abandonment as the oldest colony of the United States.

Our students have planted trees in response to the downing and damage of 20 to 40 million trees during the hurricane.  We supported the grass roots environmental initiative of Casa Pueblo in the town of Adjuntas’ to create Puerto Rico's first solar town as a long-term response to climate change. We also painted murals, cleared debris, cleaned rivers, and worked the land with local devastated farmers in the mountains of Jayuya.

The current pandemic demands we shelter our bodies in place but our solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico will not stay home. Alternative Breaks Puerto Rico is asking you to support the leadership on the front lines of the climate crisis in the Caribbean to build a better tomorrow! This year we are partnering again with Tabonuco and fiscal sponsor HASER  (Making Socio Ecological Actions Resilient) to support the completion of the San Pedrito Cabin. Please d help us build sustainability one cabin at a time!

All funds raised will go to support Tabonuco projects fiscally sponsored by HASER.
