Update 11/6/19

First-class graduated and 2nd cohort has begun.  We are happy to announce that we've been granted $400,000 over 4 years split between Urban Triage Inc. and Sankofa Educational Leadership United.  Funding will begin on 4/2020.

We will continue to support the work via crowdfunding and private donations.

The 2nd cohort has 12 people. We learned from the first class that a smaller more intimate setting would be more effective.

Advocacy training for the first class began on 10/19/19.

We'll upload photos and a video of our first graduating class and our current class later on today.

Thank YOU all for your continual support of the Supporting Black Healthy Families Initiative.

Our program so far has been completely funded by the community--YOU.

We have written several grants and we're currently writing a grant due 9/6/2019.  By 1/1/2020 it is our hope we'll have other streams of funding to support and sustain the work.

Out of the 15 graduates, 8 of them will become part-time contracted employees of Urban Triage.

Quote from a Black father, "after learning about the injuries we've endured as Black people...and learning about the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder...I now realize I've been operating from trauma and non-awareness"

Let's keep the work going! Share the link. Make monthly donations.  The link below has been included to provide more information regarding the program and our goals.

#BuildingOurCapacityToProtectBlackChildren

A group of community members came together following the incident of the 11-year-old Black girl who was brutalized at White Horse Middle School in Madison WI and decided to take action.

Through conversations, I decided to lead a movement of Black parents and supporters to develop a Rapid Response Team as well as a legal fund and legal resources to support Black children and families.

The RRT will consist of Black parents who are trained in IEP, disability rights, and other laws, DPI procedures, civil rights, and what steps to take when incidents occur as well as advocacy tools and skills. Including language, critical thinking, building analysis, personal development & telling one's story.

For the purpose of developing the skills to advocate for Black children and to develop Black parents leaders.

The RRT will respond to incidences of Racism and abuse reported to our website.

Our first step was coming together. Our next step is educating parents about the issues.  The 3rd step will be working to educate our city, the media, and elected officials and recruit folks to join us in our efforts.
While developing the website, legal fund, legal network and training for Black parents.  As well as building alliances with other organizations and making connections to strengthen our people power.

Our first parent training is set for April 27, 2019, from 10 AM to 230PM.   The first training will include all the elements mentioned above. IEP, BEP,  disability rights and other laws, DPI procedures, civil rights, and what steps to take when incidents occur as well as advocacy tools and skills. Including language, critical thinking, building analysis, personal development and telling one's story.

Part of doing the work is supporting parents and families who are the most vulnerable. Including,  food, transportation, childcare and stipends for each training.

I'm asking the Madison community and surrounding area to raise $20,000 for 6 months of movement work and development.

The first $2500.00 will be used for food, transportation, stipends, office supplies, printing,  & website development.

I would like to provide each parent (20 total) with $100 stipend for the first training. And $50 for the following training.

The first training will be repeated every 3 months for new recruits and others who would like to repeat it.

Monthly refresher training and capacity building training will be offered in between.

The funds being raised will go to support training and all other costs associated with building and developing our movement. Which will include but is not limited to, transportation, resources for parents, supplies, childcare, monthly fees and annual fees for software, website or other apps.

I set our goal at $20000 to cover the cost of ALL our expenses over the next 6 months.

Within the next 2 months, I and my team will start grant writing and soliciting funds that are sustainable.  My goal is to acquire enough funds to hire a coordinator for our Rapid Response Team by December 2019.

The future of our children's education and their ability to function in a city that is rooted inequalities depend on OUR ability as a community to empower parents by giving them the tools, resources, and support to be present and engaged.  And that work starts here.

Thank YOU for your consideration! YOU are the real MVPs.
