                                                                      Kilimanjaro Tanzania

I am asking for donations for the building of desks and chairs for the Makiidi Secondary School located in the Kilimanjaro Region of Northeastern Tanzania. Unfortunately, many students are currently sharing desks or chairs while others stand or sit on the classroom floor (see photo).

Makiidi Secondary School is a public school with 478 students and 20 teachers which is located in the Kilimanjaro Region of Northeastern Tanzania. This school is 10 miles from Bustani Secondary School where I taught physics as a Peace Corps volunteer from September 2018 to March 2020. As a result of my Peace Corps experience, I became very familiar with the many needs of the schools in the region. Sadly, these needs include, but certainly not limited to, clean water, food, school supplies, computers, shoes, proper school uniforms, and libraries.

The principal of Makiidi Secondary School, Colman Kimario, was the vice principle at the school where I taught. He and I became friends, while we discussed the educational system in Tanzania, politics in America, and so much more. After his promotion to principle at Makiidi Secondary School in January 2020, I continued to keep in touch with him. I also built a large bookcase for his office, during which he asked if I would build desks and chairs for the classrooms. I quickly replied “Trust me. You don’t want me to build any desks or chairs.” I then learned the school’s greatest need was more desks and chairs. Mr. Kimario then asked me to help fund the building of 125 desks and 50 chairs that could be built by a local carpenter.

Students at Makiidi Secondary School have many challenges in the classroom. Basic school supplies are lacking, including textbooks. Most students have poor nutrition which causes behavioral problems. And many students lack support for their educational aspirations because their family does not understand the value of education. Too many students in Tanzania have failing grades, so the students need more support and assistance for a better learning environment. I believe getting the funding and subsequent building of the desks and chairs will significantly improve the classroom environment and allow the students to improve their grades. Improving their grades is necessary for the students to advance their education to a college or university, or even to a trade school.

I ask for your support. I am seeking funds that will be used to build 125 desks and 50 chairs. The total funds needed are $2,900, with ALL DONATIONS GIVEN TO MAKIIDI SECONDARY SCHOOL.

All contributions – no matter how small – will be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU!
