Buildin' Shop: Street Dance Tribute

Over the last three years multiple significant street dance pioneers have passed away, leaving a gaping void within the street dance community. Since, there have been numerous parties to honor practitioners such as Marjory Smarth (d.2015) and Raymond Ultarte— better known as Voodoo Ray (d.2017). However, these beautiful events have perpetuated the ultimate question that followed the loss of these iconic spirits—why did we not celebrate them before they left us?

It is in response to this question that we present "Buildin' Shop", a short film project, and party, that pays tribute to street dance practitioners who we must say thank you to.

1. To preserve the authenticity and integrity of street dance styles and culture

2. To celebrate those who have contributed to the street dance community while they are alive

3. To educate about how urban culture influences the spiritual, psychological, and kinesthetic nuances of a dancing body

4. To encourage unity amongst street dance practitioners

5. To inspire youth by grounding their aspirations within the greater history of African-American and Latino dancing culture

We are raising money for:

1. The Talent: dance leaders within street dance communities will be interviewed and filmed.

2. Videographer/Editor

3. Venue: we need venues to film and to host our event

4. Food: to feed the talent and the attendees of the event

5. Producers/Admins: the people who are working behind the scenes to make this project happen
