Help build a clinic in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

“For he who has health has hope; and he who has hope, has everything” Owen Arthur

Project overview

In December 2007 I traveled to Ethiopia after being away for over 10 years in the United States of America. It was during this trip that I realized the privileges of living in a place where there is ample access to healthcare facilities that provide quality health care services. Exposure to the various shortcomings  of the few clinics in Barhir Dar, Ethiopia thus gave birth to this project. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that more than half of the population in Ethiopia lives more than 10 miles away from the nearest health facility, usually in regions with poor transportation infrastructure. In light of this background, this project is initiated  to establish a general clinic in Bahir Dar Ethiopia.  Bahir Dar is the third larges city in Ethiopia with a population of 201,450. The health status of this region is among the lowest in the world. Life expectancy at birth is estimated at 56 years, the infant mortality rate is 101 per 1000 live births, and the under five mortality rate 170 deaths per 1000.

Background
Bahir Dar is a thriving city, with rapidly expanding social and economic activities. The demand for healthcare services surpasses the region’s capacity to render adequately. Currently, Bahir Dar has one referral hospital, two health centers and one clinic that are administered by the Regional Health Bureau and a few privately owned primary health facilities. Despite the presence of these facilities, the health service coverage of the zone is still very low. People from adjoining zones share these facilities, which negatively impact the quality of health services and further widen the gap between the demand and supply. The implementation of a new clinic in this region will make primary healthcare services available to the people in Bahir Dar and alleviate the burden of providing similar services for the existing facilities.

Project’s objectives & Goals

This project consists of the construction and equipping of a clinic which will be staffed by doctors and allied health professionals to provide quality medical services.

 Upon completion, the clinic will provide:

·         Outpatient services,

·         Inpatient treatment,

·         Mother & child healthcare services (immunization, prenatal services & delivery);

·   HIV/AIDS counseling & testing

·   Minor operation/surgical services

·    Laboratory services; x-ray services

·    Ultrasound examination and pharmaceutical services.

 Please help us give hope to this community. The construction of this clinic is estimated to cost $150,000 and of this amount I have invested over $70,000. Your donation will not only provide healthcare to the people of Bahir Dar, but will also create the much needed job opportunities for the locals.
