How and Why I Started…
Well the reason is simple. To give back to little ones! Upon becoming a mother to my wonderful little daughter Sonari, it was almost as if a switch flipped in me.
I could not accept the fact that there are children in our community that may not be able experience the joy and excitement of opening up presents during the holidays like my daughter does. The struggles and the inequities they face on a daily basis became my driving force to initiate a change.
So what did I do? I gathered my students and spoke to my husband that year, and told them about an idea. They became my source of encouragement and this helped me set up and carry out the first Build a Box of Love Charity Event in 2015.
My idea was to fill empty shoe boxes with 10 - 15 essential items for elementary aged children. Each box is designed for an elementary aged boy or girl. The filled shoe boxes would then be wrapped up and delivered to schools, shelters and local pantries around the Chicagoland area.
Together that year, we managed to assemble 397 Boxes of LOVE, which we donated to two elementary schools in Chicago and the Niles food pantry.
To date, we have donated 994 boxes of love of the last two years!! Every year, I continue my mission, with a new army of encouragement and new helping hands!
