Help Benard Rebuild Kapsigot

Hello! My name is Benard Kibet, a graduating Colby Senior. My journey to Colby College and interest in the development sector, started with Kapsigot Primary School in the small community in Kapsigot, Kenya. This school has made a permanent mark in my life, as it gave me a caring, educational, and resilient background that has enabled me to climb the ladders of education and to seek ways of developing my community. I am continually moved to reward this school by making it a better place for other students to realize their potential and opportunities in their lives, which will benefit the community at large.
Kapsigot is center of excellence. In last year’s Kenyan Primary National Exam, Kapsigot Primary was leading in our region and 6th in the Sub-county. Moreover, 100 percent of its students were accepted into good high schools across the country, Kenya. The school’s excellence in the national exams comes from the commitment of the school, parents, and hard working students who see education as the only way of bringing change in the community.
I started giving back to this school after I joined high school as a mentor. During my first 2 years at Colby, I won the Davis Projects for Peace grant twice, which I used to build a new classroom for kindergarteners and to develop a water project to serve the school and the community.

Yet, there remain more challenges to work on. Half of the students are still studying in mud-floor classrooms that need to be smeared with mud every week. During the rainy season, students have to scoop the rainy waters that seeps through the “wooden walls” and flood the classrooms. The openings on the walls, as shown by the picture below, make classrooms environment chilly during the cold seasons. This makes class environment unfavorable for studies. Therefore, the school still needs four classrooms to have better facilities for all its students.

After graduating next month and before I start my year as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow in August, I would like to help build two of the four classrooms. I would like to seek your support to facilitate this project. This project will need $15, 000 to build two classrooms, $7500 for each class. If we go beyond the target, we will build all the four classrooms and if we are below the target, we will build one and use the remaining amount to buy classroom facilities.
Every dollar will count and my community will really appreciate your help in creating a better learning space for the students. This is a challenging task but any contribution you make will go a long way in supportining my community.
