Build a toilet in Ghana

Our aim is to improve living conditions to our family and the community in Yahoma, near Amasaman, Ghana, by providing a biodegradable toilet system, including a Western style toilet, squat toilet and shower. This block will be built with consideration for disabled/elderly providing easy access with larger door frames and hand rails.
Currently there are no public toilets in this area. Families are forced to squat in the bush, or in poorly constructed, makeshift pit latrines, which produce foul odours and contaminate soil. Installing a well constructed toilet with a biodegradable septic system will significantly improve the living conditions for our family and the surrounding community.
A few months ago we supplied and installed a 10,000 litre rain water tank, which has been a huge benefit to our family and the community. We feel it is very important for our family and the community to not just receive handouts, but to be given a hand up. This gives people a sense of ownership, worthiness and an ability to continue to build on projects put in place themselves, with support from us, if needed.
According to the Progress on Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Report (2014 update) produced by the World Health Organization in collaboration with UNICEF, in GHANA....
- diarrhoea causes the deaths of over 3,600 Ghanaian children every year with cholera outbreaks occurring too frequently in our cities.
- 70% of all diseases in Ghana are caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.
- 67% of Ghanaians lack access to improved sanitation or are entirely without toilet facilities.
We are doing what we can personally to assist the community however our resources are limited. This is why we have decided to publicly ask for help with this project with an aim to get this toilet built as soon as possible.
