Pull Up the City

PULL UP THE CITY:
We're revitalizing Chicago's West Side by turning vacant lots to jackpots. Taking broken glass and trash and converting it to cash. Transforming minds one pull up at a time.

We are building free Community Fitness Gardens for the west side community. In addition, we are expanding programs at our world class academy of movement to provide Chicago's underserved youth free access to high quality fitness education, healthy food and empowering events.

Who We Are & What We've Done

The Pull Up the City Project started out in the parks of Chicago with a group called the Go Infinite Tribe. A free weekly meetup at the neighborhood playground centered around music, fitness and good community vibes. Soon the tribe grew and traveled to different parts of the city spreading the culture of calisthenics and healthy lifestyle across the Chi. Founded by Marcelino Riley, a 3-time American Ninja Warrior who grew up in the inner city with a vision to make high quality health and fitness accessible to underserved communities. Pull Up the City is the evolution of the movement, a non profit built to be the foundation for future generations to have open access to wellness resources that advance health equity for Chicago’s black and brown communities.

Impact:
Since 2015 we have served over 1,000 students, partnered with 50 plus organizations, facilitated 300 plus free fitness workshops, trained and certified 33 fitness ambassadors, and organized dozens of playground/neighborhood clean up events.

Build & Beautify:
We’re making a massive impact on the west side where we’re turning vacant lots to jackpots. Taking broken glass and trash and converting it to cash. Transforming minds one pull up at a time.

Radical, Revolutionary & Relevant:
Our first passion project was a hazardous lot in East Garfield Park that we transformed into a thriving Community Fitness Garden. Featured in the 2018 Chicago Innovation Awards this wellness sanctuary has everything from pull up bars for physical prosperity to organically grown fruits and veggies for inner clarity. We’re bridging the gap in life expectancy and fighting for health equity.

At the garden we’ve partnered with a West Side recovery center, Above & Beyond to provide free healthy food and free weekly fitness classes to Chicago’s homeless and those in recovery from Drug and Alcohol addictions. We are helping people heal from their addictions by providing positive alternatives and helping them develop healthy sustainable habits.

West Side Youth
Our mission is simple: keep kids healthy and off the streets while activating healthy communities. Our after school and summer camp programs are keeping kids off the streets by providing a fun, safe and innovative space to play, learn and perform. Last year we provided scholarships to 90% of the kids in our 8-week summer program for athletic and leadership development. The camp was hosted by American Ninja Warrior athletes and ....The camp also included weekly gardening workshops teaching kids to plant seeds, grow their own food at our community garden.

Where We Are Going
Our plan is to expand this spring working with other purpose driven organizations and building more community fitness gardens on Chicago’s  West Side. At our Academy we will be launching a menu of free wellness programs including our annual summer camp featuring pro athletes for underprivileged youth.

In order for our operation to build more gardens and serve more families in need, we need a little help from you all. I am grateful for everyone who has helped us thus far and excited for the new people joining our movement.

We will be utilizing the funds to build a new community fitness garden in West Humboldt Park and to update and expand free programming at our academy: rent:$3,500, repairs: $4500, utilities $1200, employee payroll (9) $20,000, equipment $22,000, supplies and uniforms $3000, Murals $9,500, Insurance $3,000, event production $5,400, garden development $8,000, transportation $36,000.
