Build a Parent-Led Advocacy Business

We're Special Support Services,  a woman-owned and parent-led advocacy group for parents of students with disabilities based in NYC. 

We not only work professionally in the field, but we also spend our volunteer hours advancing education and disability rights at the city and state levels. Our most recent effort is Spread Thin , a report detailing the impact of the special education teacher staffing shortage on students with disabilities. See the October 21, 2020 story "Survey Aims to Identify What Services Students with Disabilities Are Missing " by Jillian Jorgensen of NY1/Spectrum News.

To develop and conduct the survey took roughly 2 weeks, 3 weeks of community outreach in four different languages, followed by 3 dedicated weeks of organizing, analyzing, and writing the analysis and compiling the results. We did this on our off-hours, late nights, and weekends, while still taking care of our families and supporting our clients.  We also invested our personal funds into online tools such as Survey Monkey as we needed to create the survey and to get analysis. 

We became an LLC in August 2020 and now seek to raise $2,000 to put toward the working capital of our newly formed LLC. Collectively, we’ve had years of experience working in nonprofits but we wanted Special Support Services to be different. As a partnership, we are able to move quickly to respond to community crises while always keeping parent interests on the center stage. 

We’ve never undertaken a project with the hopes of compensation.
