Build a garden for the gardenless

Donation protected
Waterloo  Street Community Garden is a community run garden built between The Old Market Theatre and the Waterloo Street Arch in Hove, East Sussex. The Garden was resurrected from its derelict state and was initially funded by the, now deceased, author Louise Rennison, and set up by local residents, Peggy Thomas and Bill Cowell, in the early 00’s.

The aim was to create a “garden for the gardenless”, a pleasant environment for the residents to get to know their neighbours, exchange ideas and make friends. Most people in this central Hove location don’t have an outside space so people were encouraged to to use the garden as an extension of their homes and a beautiful space was created and maintained by a team of volunteers.

In the recent past, events have conspired to make the garden feel a little less loved and this year, major work had to be carried out, again by volunteers. Those same volunteers have now decided to take on the garden project and aim to improve and update the space whilst maintaining the ideals of the past.

“The Friends of Waterloo Street Community Garden” is the name of our Group and we are at the beginning of a project, which we hope will result in the garden becoming a biodiversity haven, a meeting place for friends and neighbours and a hub for community events but

… we need your help …

The work carried out has meant that we’ve lost most of the static plant troughs so now we need to reimagine and redesign the garden and for this, we require; large and medium plant pots and troughs, trellis’, benches, tables and chairs and other, more general, garden equipment.

In the past the garden was managed by donations from local businesses and residents but with the renewal of the garden we need to go further afield. If you can help us, in any way, be it monetary or a donation of something we could use in the garden or volunteers for the Queen’s Jubilee Lunch or gardening would be brilliant

Many thanks for reading this letter, we hope to see you in the garden soon.
