Bugaboos - East Creek Camp Toilet Replacement

The Friends of Bugaboo Park (FOBP) started working on human waste management around the Bugaboo Spires in the early 2000s. Along with volunteers and support from the Alpine Club of Canada, BC Parks and the CMH Bugaboo Lodge, alpine toilets were installed at the Bugaboo-Snowpatch Col and the West Ridge of Pigeon. In the mid-2000s, the FOBP installed a similar ‘green throne’ alpine toilet at the remote East Creek Camp location with funding from Arc’teryx.

The green thrones have helped to significantly reduce the amount of human waste left to pollute mountain water sources. The design of the green thrones however does not prevent the barrels from filling with rain water and snow melt, and also quickly fill up with urine resulting in the need for more frequent helicopter flights to remove the full barrels. The green thrones add a significant carbon footprint and cost in the amount of helicopter flying required to remove the waste. 

The FOBP plans to replace the East Creek toilet (outside of Bugaboo Glacier Provincial Park) with a urine-diverting system that will significantly reduce the amount of flying required to service the site. These toilets have been tried and proven effective worldwide, including in several BC Parks. The open-air design has been used at elevations as high as 3,300m in Colorado. https://www.toilettech.ca
