My name is Jillian Hanesworth and I am the director of Leadership Development at Open Buffalo as well as the first Poet Laureate in the history of Buffalo, New York!
I owe books and access to books a lot of credit for my success. I grew up born and raised on the East Side of Buffalo with little to no access to public libraries. The libraries in school are where I found myself. Through reading, this shy little girl was given the opportunity to immerse myself in other worlds, learn new words and cultures, and give me permission to imagine life outside of my own experiences.
With this in mind, I decided to launch "Buffalo Books!" This project will increase literacy and access by taking libraries directly to the community giving community members and kids the opportunity to own books, learn from local artists and authors, and share books with others in the community.
