Our dear friend Buddy Zech likes to come off as the curmudgeonly Get-Off-My-Lawn-Kids Guy, but, in reality, he is one of the most generous, kind-hearted souls we all know. Our gentle giant.
Buddy needs our help now. Most of you know about his past battle against stage-4 cancer, and the resulting destruction of his body by the chemotherapy he underwent. He is disabled: constantly in pain, constantly medicating for the pain, unable to work, walk, or enjoy life. The fatigue that is the result of all of his illnesses is debilitating, leaving him weak and depressed. Even passion for the Nationals, music, New York bagels and lox, friends, and raging at trump can’t get his mojo going. He can only (barely) afford the cheapest diabetes meds available, and the side effect for that prescription is weight gain, which he’s doing big time. That extra weight is now also affecting his health, and doing damage to his bone-on-bone knees. He’ll be completely disabled soon if he doesn’t get knee replacements, which, of course, he can’t afford. He takes a half-dozen meds, which costs him about 30% of his already limited fixed income. He has Type 2 diabetes, ligament and joint damage from chemo, glaucoma, two destroyed knees, nerve damage, and chronic fatigue. This not only drains his spirit, it drains his already limited finances. And now his mother’s health is going downhill and he’s contemplating funeral costs. Add to that, Elizabeth’s disabling ill health and it is a tough situation in the Zech household. There are days he has to decide whether to buy meds or eat.
Buddy was resistant when we approached him about doing a GoFundMe page, but after showing him a meme about how so many people are using GoFundMe for medical expenses that it’s becoming one of the country’s biggest health providers, he relented.
All of us should count our blessings for our health and financial security and be thankful we have Buddy in our lives. All his relatives, LI friends, Civil War friends, PA friends, theater friends, music friends, know that there’s nothing more fun than having him bitch to you about…everything. It’ll be good to hear that hearty laugh again. Please donate whatever you can, share this with other friends of Buddy’s, share with your own generous, charitable friends who don’t know Buddy. He would do it for any of us in a New York-minute.
