Buddy Bench for Brenda

Donation protected
Brenda, or Rainbow as she was belovedly known was always there for childrn, and welcoming them into the group and her heart. In memory of the amazing Auntie, Mom, Friend, Cousin, and Guider she was we wanted to fundraise for a "Buddy Bench" to be placed at the school where she ran her girl guide groups out of.

The cost of the bench is $3400, with another option available for $2200. We want to get her the nicest bench so we've selected the goal of raising the $3400 and would love help from family, friends, and the guiding community.

We will work closely with the Township to Langley to purchase this bench, to have it installed at a place where children can use it day and night, and where the bench will be properly maintained for years to come.

The money will be transferred to a colleague, Jami Savage who will then send all the funds directly to the Township of Langley. Any additional funds raised will be donated to the local Girl Guides.

" Without question, Brenda epitomized what it means to be a girl guide leader. She exuded an ageless enthusiasm, putting herself in six-year-old girls' shoes to help imagine what their experience would be like.

To the girls, she was Rainbow Owl and when we think of what a rainbow represents, it helps define for us who Brenda was as a Guider.

Rainbows are magical arches in the sky, and Brenda brought an element of enchantment to each meeting. From the  jingling of a princess sparkle bucket, to handing out pink ribboned wands for the girls to twirl while they sang songs around her homemade campfire, Brenda transformed a mundane gymnasium into a land of balloons, glitter and wonderful curiosity, where each girl was engaged and each girl mattered.

They say that each vibrant hue of a rainbow blends into the next, without a hard boundary-- that was Brenda. She was approachable and colourful, frequently taking on the persona of Lucy Penelope Petunia Pimple-Bottom, her long lost cousin and camp inspector. Brenda would come out wearing pink sandals, a leopard print fur jacket, a boa, blue wig and funky sunglasses. The girls would squeal with excitement and clamour for her attention, after rushing around to make sure their beds and gear were tidy and everything was in proper order for "Lucy's" light-hearted white glove inspection. We've all chased the elusive rainbow hoping to find the pot of gold at the end of it, but with Brenda, there was nothing the girls longed to search for because SHE was their true treasure.

The coolers full of freezies after tree planting, the aprons Brenda personalized for each girl for Rally in the Valley, the detailed memory books, the candlelit walkways for enrolment ceremonies-- these are just a few of the countless ways Brenda went above and beyond year after year to make a difference in the lives of the many Sparks and Brownies who were fortunate enough to have known her.

She provided thoughtful guidance, unconditional support and it was inspiring to see how Brenda always managed to soothe the craziness of twenty little girls running around at each meeting. She did this with a balance of compassion, patience, and her straight-shooting sense of humour. Brenda had a naturalness that the girls were drawn to, and her selflessness will forever serve as an example for all of us.

A rainbow is light reflected through millions of droplets of water. Today, our tears are the rain, and Brenda will forever be remembered as the sunshine in all of the girls' lives.

They say that the ladder to Heaven is built of rungs made up of the colours of the rainbow. Because of Brenda--our very own Rainbow Owl--  that ladder just became a whole lot brighter."

Please let us know if you have questions or want to help us.

Sincerely, Brenda's friends and fellow Guiders,
Rebecca, Jo, Erin, Camille, and Jami
