BUCC Student Scholarship Appeal was created to fund Ukrainian students admitted to attend Oxford, Cambridge and other top British universities as undergraduates, but who cannot find the necessary funding because the existing scholarship programs available to Ukrainians are only for graduate school places. Since the Ukrainian currency has so greatly declined in value since 2008 against the British pound, it has become very difficult for Ukrainian students and their families to fund British university fees and expenses themselves. The BUCC aims to solve this problem.
We have selected, as our first candidate for funding, Karyna Nechyporuk a brilliant, a 17-year old mathematics student, who last year was accepted to study at Trinity College, Cambridge University, the legendary college for mathematicians, starting with Newton (her curriculum vitae is below). Karyna needs to raise £30,000 per year to cover tuition and expenses to study mathematics at Trinity College.
Please help us to support this fine young student to realize her dreams and continue her study of mathematics, the foundation of computer science, at the highest international level. It is extraordinary for someone to succeed at the age of 16 with their Cambridge entrance exams (even in the UK), which is especially impressive as she did this while also getting top marks in her regular Ukrainian school work. Ukraine needs such persons trained at the highest level to help develop its future.
Karyna wrote to us explaining why she has been fascinated by math since primary school:
“I would like to study mathematics at Cambridge, where I was accepted last year. Talking to people who are already studying there, visiting Cambridge and reviewing details on their educational model have made me even more sure that Cambridge is eactly what I need in order to develop my mathematical ability. I am delighted by their educational model. It’s an opportunity to study math with a unique speed suited to each individual’s progress, while being surrounded by highly motivated people. It is exactly what I need in order to develop my mathematical ability. After spending a year preparing for the special Cambridge exams, in addition to my regular school work work in Ukraine, I received an offer from Trinity College.
However, I then learned that, as an overseas student, my Cambridge fees with maintenance will cost more than £40,000 per year. With my family, I can pay only £10,000, one-quarter of what is needed, leaving £30,000 to be raised, so I had to defer my offer last year to search for scholarships and sponsors of my education. However, there are still no scholarships presently available for undergraduate study by a person like me from Ukraine. I have created my own clothing brand to sell shirts and hoodies with funny prints connected to science and have been working hard at other jobs to raise funding, but it seems that I will only be able to raise £10,000 with my family’s help. The Сoronavirus has made other jobs very difficult to find. The BUCC’s crowdfunding initiative on GoFundMe appears to be my only chance.
Presently, I continue to study maths at the National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv. I also teach kids who attend math circles on weekends and summer math camps. I have been a teacher for over three years (both for groups and individuals) This year I will be teaching children in orphanages to help give them a chance for a better education.
I have participated in a lot of international competitions and have had some success, such as winning silver and gold medals at EGMO (European Girls Mathematical Olympiad) and a bronze medal at MEMO (Middle European Mathematical Olympiad). During the past two summers, I have participated in the following international math programs: Maths Beyond Limits (Mathematical Camp in Poland) - twice, and PROMYS Europe (a six-week mathematical program at Oxford). This has made me even more aware that I need much more such a high level, intense education.
In the future, I want to find a job that will allow me to use and advance the mathematical skills that I am developing. I want to continue helping to develop younger Ukrinian students who want to study math, and I wish generally to help to improve the maths educational system in Ukraine. Currently, I am really interested in IT, and I am learning programming languages and the basics of Data Science.“
Please help us to raise the funding Karyna needs in order to take her place at Trinity College, Cambridge, and realize her future. If you have any questions, please contact B.C. Toms or Evgeniya Kalashnikova at the BUCC at: tel.: +38044-490-6000; email: [email redacted].ua
The British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (BUCC) undertakes public service activities to help Ukraine in its transition to a western economy. We were founded 23 years ago to promote trade and investment between Ukraine and the UK, and in particular through the City of London, the financial capital of Europe, to generally develop trade and investment internationally with Ukraine. For this purpose, we have organized many major events and projects, such as Ukrainian Week in London. (Please see our website http://bucc.com.ua/) All the donations you pay to GoFundMe appeal to a bank account, and it automaticallu goes to Trinity collee Cambridge. There is no transaction fee from BUCC.
