For Mike

Hello all - Before anyone reads any further I just want to clear up any confusion: Denise Adams is Mike's sister and primary caregiver. We've given her power of withdrawal over the funds since Mike doesn't really have the energy or focus to deal with bills, banks, etc hence why the account says Mike is raising money for her.

I’m a friend of Mike Adams and I’m writing this on his behalf. I’m going to start this with the gut punch because I can’t think of any other way to begin and I need you to pay attention until the end. Unfortunately, I know Mike is going to read this, so I’ve been searching for a euphemism to express the truth of it but nothing I’ve thought of conveys the appropriate gravity so I’m just coming out with it even though it breaks my heart to do so.

Mike Adams has cancer and it’s bad, very bad.

I have no idea who among his friends knows what or how much so I’m going to start at the beginning. If any of this information is already known to you, please feel free to skip ahead.

On October 6th Mike was on his way to work when he suddenly felt light-headed and fainted on the subway. His companion, alarmed, wanted to call an ambulance but Mike wanted the payday, so he soldiered on. When it happened a second time his work mate insisted, and Mike agreed. At the emergency room a number of tests were performed, and the doctors found the first mass -  a large tumor by his esophagus that was pressing against his spine and inoperable. In danger of paralysis, he underwent chemotherapy to shrink the tumor. Further tests revealed the cancer had metastasized and spread to a few other parts of his body. The hope was that he could begin immunotherapy to boost his own body’s ability to combat the disease and extend his life after the initial rounds of chemotherapy had been completed. Unfortunately, Mike had a violent reaction to the immunotherapy that landed him in the hospital. More tests were done, and they found out that the cancer was everywhere. It’s in his brain, his lungs, his bones ...everywhere. The cancer was described by his doctors as fast and aggressive. After one more failed attempt at immunotherapy, treatment was abandoned, and the doctors have switched to a strategy of pain management. Mike has come to terms with this reality. He’s picked out a hospice for when the time comes but for now, he’s living at home under the very watchful eye of his sister Denise.

The pain management prescribed by his doctors consists of Morphine – lots of Morphine. Mike hates it for a number of reasons – besides the numerous side effects it leaves him loopy and unable to function or hold a conversation and he doesn’t want to spend his days in an addled stupor. This is where you come in. He asked his physicians about marijuana and they said absolutely, if it helps go for it. However, the medical marijuana laws in NY being what they are they recommended he pursue alternative means of appropriation. There was one caveat – they really don’t want him smoking it. The best edibles to date are candies. He doesn’t have to prepare them or mix them with food – just pop one in his mouth as needed and let the THC do its work. Both Mike and his sister have noticed the difference. It does wonders for his anxiety and his appetite. His mood elevates and there’s none of the side effects associated with the morphine. Obviously, the edibles can’t wholly replace the morphine, but they do make the whole situation more tolerable, allow Mike to function and elevate his quality of life.  A supply has been secured but it’s expensive – $400 dollars a month.

Mike is unable to work. He’s currently jumping through the hoops required for Medicare and social security but it’s taking some time and of course it’s not enough. As fellow Americans I’m sure you’re all familiar with the endless fiscal indignities the seriously ill must suffer at the hands of our ethically bankrupt healthcare system. Your assistance is required. I’m not going to beseech or use flowery words because I shouldn’t have to. This is Mike Adams we’re talking about. And getting people to want to do good for Mike Adams should be about as difficult as selling really good drugs so pony up.

Mike, his sister and all involved thank you in advance.
