In Memory of Bryan Baltierra, a US Marine

Donation protected
Bryan, a Private First Class (PFC) United States Marine, was involved in a tragic training accident that occurred at 5:45 PM on Thursday, July 30th, 2020.

Bryan is the son of Carlos and Evelyn Baltierra, brother of Natalie (23 years old), Emily (21 years old), and Sara (16 years old) Baltierra. Bryan was only 18 years old at the time of his death and was soon to celebrate his birthday on September 18th.

Around 5:45 PM Thursday, an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit started taking on water and “rapidly sank” off the coast of California.

The AAV was returning to the amphibious transport dock Somerset after conducting a training raid at San Clemente Island, California. The vehicle had 15 Marines and one sailor aboard at the time, confirmed by the Marine Corps.

Shortly after taking on water the vehicle “rapidly sank” with all 16 service members still on board.  Eight of the military personnel aboard the AAV were able to escape the vehicle. One of the recovered was pronounced deceased at the hospital with two others listed in critical condition.

Bryan was one of the remaining eight military personnel who was still missing. Search and rescue efforts searched continuously since the incident occurred.

After an extensive 40-hour search, the commandant of the Marine Corps, General David H. Berger, made the official announcement stating that "after all resources were exhausted" the search and rescue operation for the 7 Marines and 1 Sailor was concluded. All eight missing service members are presumed deceased. Efforts will now turn to search and recovery.

The family received the pronouncement of Bryan's death during an in-home visit by military personnel on Saturday, August 1st at 12 PM.

We have started this fund to help his family pay for funeral expenses and due to the financial hardships caused by COVID-19. Gifts in any amount are greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your love, prayers, support, and thoughtful gifts to the Baltierra family in memory of our dearly missed Bryan Juan-Carlos Baltierra.
