Bruce Rubenstein Baseball Field

Bruce Rubenstein loved bringing the community together, building positive outcomes through collective voices, in work and in play!

There was no champion as dedicated to justice, righting wrongs, protecting children, and ensuring that children were thriving and supported. Bruce lived the truth that we are stronger creating proposals together, sharing funding, avoiding competition, and strategizing to raise community voices to speak truth to power.  Always as a collaborative, a team.

Bruce's wife Nancy speaks so beautifully about what Baseball meant to Bruce.  Baseball was Bruce’s favorite pastime, the one he loved most in the world. “Watching the boys play ball in the park,” was how he described it.  If he saw a local game as he was driving down the street, he’d pull over and sit in the stands, supporting the kids. Bruce played baseball all his life. He was talented and smart at it. He was a Chicago White Sox fan and a Dodger fan. He avidly played Fantasy Baseball,  imagining being the manager of his own major league team! I think Bruce set a record for the number of times a person watched the Kevin Costner baseball film, Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come!” He had the dialogue memorized and he always wept at the end!!

Bruce believed that we can use the power of sport to unite, educate and inspire young people to create a more peaceful world.  He believed that youth in communities bridge division between people through sport, and for him, the game of baseball, can develop young leaders who help to change perceptions.

We are raising funds for a community baseball field in an underserved neighborhood. Together with the Dodgers Foundation, we will either renovate an existing Dreamfield near Echo Park and have signage put up in his honor, or create a new field in South Los Angeles. Our goal is to preserve Bruce’s vision of playing baseball together as an integral part of any community. We know this project to build a field for neighborhood boys and girls will make him smile, and make him weep with gratitude. Please offer what you can. Nancy will be receiving and managing all funds with the Dodgers Foundation.
