The Brooklyn War Memorial has been closed for 25 years. Built as a tribute to the more than 300,000 Brooklynites who served in the war and especially to the more than 11,000 who died serving overseas. Without proper maintenance and funding, the closed memorial has fallen into disrepair. It needs new stone work, new roof, new electric, new plumbing, new glass, insulation and most important a ramp,  handicapped accessible bathrooms and an elevator. Phase One of the restoration includes upgrading the bathrooms - making them handicapped accessible and installing an elevator. The cost of Phase One is estimated to be $1.5 million.  The long term goal is to create a self-sustaining community center/veterans outreach and training center.
