Brooklyn Bryant needs our help....

Brooklyn would kill me if he knew I was writing this right now, he doesn’t ever want charity – he wants to be the one providing charity. I am writing this for my friend, Brooklyn, a guy who would give you the shirt off his back, after he made some smart-ass comment on why you needed it.  He has been there for so many of us over the years, a safe ride home, letting you cut to the front of the line at your favorite bar or even taking you to Denny’s to get breakfast at 3 a.m. He has done so many things for all of us and now he needs our help!

Right now, Brooklyn can’t even remember all the fun times we have all had together. He is getting better every day. For those of you who don’t know yet, on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 Brooklyn was scheduled for a routine below the knee amputation. This time is was not routine. In the last stages of the procedure, Brooklyn’s heart stopped beating. They were able to revive him but not before his heart stopped 3 separate times. It is in true Brooklyn fashion to scare the crap out of all of us. This time he takes the cake.

He was placed in ICU under sedation on a ventilator after the surgery. His body needed some time to stabilize and recuperate. His creatinine levels were 4 times higher than the average normal functioning adult kidney. His blood was toxic! After Brooklyn’s heart stopped and he was placed in ICU on a ventilator, they finally decided to wake him up, that is when the real worry came into place. He struggled to wake up, it took many hours and the removal of all the medications from his blood using dialysis. When he finally was conscious enough to have a conversation it became obvious there were other complications. His memory and motor skills has suffered. They performed an EEG, MRI, CT scan and a slew of other tests. Doctors couldn’t pinpoint what happened to cause these traumas and said it would just take time. Friday, March 9th, 2018 Brooklyn was able to move to a rehab facility. This is a step in the right direction, the beginning of a long road back. He will have physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, along with around the clock care for his leg, which on the upside, so far, is healing well.

Brooklyn got to this point because he has Type 2 diabetes. He has been in an uphill battle with his blood sugar for about 15 years now. He has been in the hospital, had ulcers, infections, and even lost all his toes. The doctors tried very hard to prevent this most recent surgery, but it was a losing battle. He has been on dialysis for the last few months. Being on dialysis is rough and it makes it hard to be a good father to his girls, be a good husband, take care of his house, and dogs. Taking every other day off life to do that would be a challenge for anyone. Brooklyn is by trade Class A CDL truck driver, owner-operator, all 48 states. He has to be out there driving to make money and it takes money to pay for all the new medical expenses plus the on going dialysis.  Brooklyn can no longer drive semi-trucks; the DOT says you must have two legs and a healthy set of kidneys to do that, ha-ha, what do they know! Once he is up and running he has a job that is waiting for him. For now, though he needs help, just because his heart stopped doesn’t mean his bills will. If all the people Brooklyn knows gave $5.00 it would ease the burden he feels being laid up in the hospital bed. All the money donated will go to helping Brooklyn directly, pay his bills and make sure once he is out of this mess he has a home to go home to.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
