<div>We are planning to install a forest garden, replacing an area of tarmac in our school playground, and we need your support to raise the money to make it happen!

<div>In 2022, Brookfield Year 4 children wrote to the headteacher Laurel to campaign for a secret garden in the playground, so that there are more plants, wildlife and trees in their play space. After the school’s eco-committee asked their classmates what they’d like to see and do in the playground, and consultation on the design with the wider school community, we are making the secret garden happen!

<div>The forest garden area will host three key activities: Forest School and outdoor learning; natural play; and developing a food forest garden. This combination of uses in the roughly 25 metres x 12 metres space makes for a unique educational resource. The forest garden area will increase plant life and encourage biodiversity through turning a large area of tarmac into a forest garden using climate-friendly growing approaches.

<div>The area will be used daily by the school for play time, lessons as part of the curriculum, and forest school and gardening sessions. We conservatively estimate that there will be around 11,000 unique student engagements with the new forest garden per year. The majority of planting and maintenance will be done with school classes and the wider community of parents and community volunteers at open days.

<div>The final design includes a number of green features, including: a pond; greenhouse; biodiversity observation platform; food forest planting; fallen tree for climbing; orchard planting; native hedgerow; composting area; woodworking area; and perennial vegetable production. The planting will include bluebell, hazel, wild garlic, ferns, fruit trees, lemon balm, elderflower, sorrel, lovage, mint, hazel, and willow - to name a few!

<div>The forest garden will have a number of positive social and ecological outcomes, including: mental and physical health benefits for children playing and learning in the space; increased number of trees and plants emitting oxygen and sequestering carbon; increased biodiversity with more habitats for insects birds and animals; a space to offer learning opportunities in food growing and woodland skills.

<div>We will make a plaque listing all the people that donate to the forest garden that will be put up in the space, and you will receive an invite to the grand opening! <div>Donations will support different elements of the forest garden budget: soil and compost, excavation and groundworks, biodiversity observation platform, perennial food plants, and agroecological design.
