At this time, Brooke currently has a 96-degree curve of her spine with severe rotation thus crushing her lungs making her current lung function at 43%. She wears a brace 24 hours a day and is still a kind hearted lovable little girl who always wants to care for others and never goes without a smile on her face. Her parents sought out what they are considering the “Miracle Scoliosis Cure” surgery called ASC (Anterior Scoliosis Correction)
This type of surgery is considered a ”Hybrid” surgery meaning it will need to be completed in two to possible three phases. With ASC, Brooke’s Spine will be able to “de-rotate” thus taking the cinder block off her lung and allowing her to regain lung function all while taking her 96 degree curve down to her natural bend of 46 Degrees. ASC is NOT a “Rod Placement” surgery, it is a cord that preserves the spines NATURAL state (Flexibility). They are getting this Miracle surgery done in NJ. While they continue what seems to be the never ending battle with their NY Insurance to cover everything in full they are told at this time each surgery is going to have out of pocket costs of 50,000.
Brooke’s been battling multiple medical issues her whole life. Since age 1, she has experienced Hip Dysplasia surgery putting her in a Spica Cast (Full Body Cast) for 9 Months, shortly after she battled Seizures in which she had to be medicated to control them, meanwhile she was diagnosed with progressive infantile scoliosis putting her in a back brace. At the age of 5 she underwent corrective heart surgery to repair her ASD (Atrial Septal Defect or known as (“hole in the heart”). At the age of 6 Brooke was placed in a Mehta Cast (Body cast of torso) in hopes to harness the progression of her scoliosis. Unfortunately, after a year of the cast the progression of her curve increased, and she no longer has the option of a non-invasive approach to correct her spine.
ASC is Brookes absolute BEST option to have a normal “Life” and just be a kid. The entire family Mom (Marlene), Dad (Josh), Brooke and Little Brother Bradley have endured so much through all of this but still always remain positive and have a great outlook on life trying to find the good in every situation and help anyone they can. Any little bit will help this amazing family… THANK YOU!
