On Sunday, at the end of a long day selling curry at Markthalle Neun, my friend Brooke was robbed of all the cash earnings for the day plus her float, a combined amount estimated in excess of €4,000.
Three thieves approached her stand. The thieves knew to pick a moment when there was only one person behind the counter. One of them caused a distraction at one end of the counter while two others grabbed all the bills from her cash wallet. No, the wallet was not in an easy place to reach, but they managed.
She did not just lose her profits: she invested around €2000 in food and fees to be at the event. Her wallet contained at least another €1000+ in float. The goal of €3000 is just to get Brooke back to a state BEFORE she and her assistant put in hours of labour.
This is a huge blow for Brooke, not just financially, but emotionally. Getting robbed fucking sucks. It’s a kick in the gut. The profits might be gone forever, but without at least another 2-3 thousand, investing in another event is going to be tough.
Brooke has been selling her Japanese curry at markets in Berlin and beyond for a couple years. Even a small event is a big investment of food and time for an independent business owner, but she loves doing it even though she knows it can be a financial risk if sales are slow.
