Investing in Bronx Youth

My name is Ian Madover and I am the Director of B.O.S.S. (Bronx Office for Student Start-Ups) that teaches high school students what it means to be an entrepreneur and most importantly, that no matter where you live, how much money you have, or your age - if you have a great idea and enthusiasm...anything is possible.

My current class is at Fannie Lou Freedom HS in the South Bronx and I have been working with 5 students who over the past 4 months have developing ideas and working really hard to write a business plan. The semester culminates in two weeks with a final pitch for funding for their ideas. This is where you all come in - I want to raise money so the judges in the competition have funds to allocate to the different students, if their idea is worthy -- to build their business beyond the school walls.

Our students ideas include: an apparel company called Sweet 'N Sour, that looks to bring to life the dueling emotions that face any kid growing up in a neighborhood divided by drug dealers and working families; a haircare company, called La Bado, whose name means beautiful in African and whose shampoo and conditioning products are not only healthy for your hair but give back to the very country who gave it its name; a necklace company called Love Por Dentro, which means Love Within - creating dog tag necklaces that are all about self-love; an apparel company called Legends BX, whose designs are all about celebrating the real-life legends that we come across everyday not the once that grace the pages of celebrity magazines and a hat company called Bronx SB (short for Stop Bullying) that offers hats with the words "I AM DIFFERENT" emblazoned across it to bring light to a very powerful and important issue for high schoolers.

The work, effort and enthusiasm that these students have shown is beyond extraordinary and deserves your attention -- and it is up to us now to show them that with some funding their ideas can actually become a reality.  Thanks so much.
