Help Me Fix My Car

Hey! My name is Gus, I'm 19 years old, and I will have finished my junior year of college come this December.

Just this past January, I found out that I am a father. My daughter was born by C-section on October 13th, at 8lbs and 2oz. She is beautiful and healthy, and the pride and joy of my life; however, she is with her mom in Florida. To travel to go see her and her mom is not only very expensive, but is also incredibly difficult to coordinate in conjunction with school and work. The van that I drive now is on its last leg; not only that, but insurance and gas for it are surprisingly expensive. With a newborn daughter, trying to get myself through college as fast as possible, housing expenses, and sparse job opportunities due in part to the pandemic, I've begun to sink financially.

On the bright side, I was given my dream car (albeit in a sorry state), a 2001 Saab 9-3 Viggen in laser red. The best part is that it solves all my problems: first, it has a manual transmission, meaning it will produce better fuel economy during my commute (consisting of numerous steep hills); insurance for the car is much better, saving me roughly $30 per month; it has fewer miles on it than my current car, and if repaired and treated properly will last me much, much longer; finally, it has enough space to fit all my luggage for when I travel to Florida to visit my daughter, which I want to do as often as possible.

Initially, I had thought that maybe it wouldn't be that big of a deal to get it running again. But I was wrong. Having thoroughly inspected the car, my mechanic friend and I realized that it will require at least $3K to get running and become a dependable vehicle again. I have a passion for working on cars, and I plan to do all the repairs myself, but at the moment I just can't afford to buy parts. I need to get this car running as soon as possible. I am terrified that my van won't last me until I find a higher-paying job, especially as jobs are few and far between during this pandemic. My income comes from my vehicle: in a very immediate sense, without a car I am not able to make it to work and make money; in the big picture, my education is what sets up a good future for my daughter, her mother, and myself, and so it is imperative that I stay in school.

It is not in my nature to ask for money, and so I am utterly humbled; however, any support I receive will help me to set up a good life for my new family, and drive my dream car. I cannot fully express how grateful I am for any donation, no matter how small - just know that this means the world to me. All of you will be forever in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you.
