Thank you everyone for your contributions. We have been able to reach our goal because of Go Fund Me and other individuals who were generous in their personal donations. The grant has been submitted! Anticipated notification on the grant awards is late March or early April. Everyone is feeling good about the possibilities and how timely with all the talk of broadband in the news.
The Connecting Courtland, AL: Broadband Internet Project aims to provide a hybrid fiber and wireless communications infrastructure solution to the rural towns in Lawrence County, Alabama. The Courtland Development Council, working in partnership with the Courtland Historical Foundation and the Town of Courtland are spearheading this project to bring North Alabama into the 21st century thru funding provided by the Applachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant program.
Our match goal is $71,000 and we are only $15,000 away! Any donation small or large will help us bring this vital infrastructurre to the region. Extra donations we receive past this goal will expand the broadband coverage area. Deadline for donations is 5PM, December 19, 2017.
Currently the Town of Courtland, and Lawrence County as a whole suffers from underserved markets related to broadband Internet service availability. Services offered from the major communications providers (i.e. Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, etc.) vary greatly in availability, and affordability in the residential and commercial markets. Local businesses are especially struggling with the reliability of current internet services.
Expected impacts of the project include an increase in the quality of life for the residents of the Towns of Courtland, Moulton, North Courtland, Town Creek and Hillboro, including:
telemedicine
at-home educational opportunities
at-home entreprenurial ventures
improved day-to-day business operations for existing local business
increased productivity for existing local businesses
preservation of local businesses thus historical structures
increased future economic development activity
