Britton Poppletons Journey

2016 Update on recurrence- The Beast is Back!

Britton has been experiencing a great deal of pain in his back, hips and right leg. We wanted to make every excuse for it possible from bone marrow regeneration to walking too much. We would talk of eating healthier, taking more vitamins and sitting less...
Much like the first time on a Friday night the pain became too great.... Luke and Marnie took Britt to the hospital. We thought nerve pain and restless leg syndrome... In all honesty we thought of it ALL except for what it is. I mean why would it be anything else???? Britt had scans less than 2 months ago a year cancer free, clean blood work.
Life catches us off guard sometimes. The MRI that was administered last Friday scanned just 3 inches higher than his previous year of scans. The dreaded news. We found another tumor. This time in Britton's spine in his L3 vertebrae as well as a second tumor in his T10 both have been confirmed at this time to be Ewings Sarcoma.
Although this isn't anything any of us were prepared for we all know the strength of Britton and his Army!! Live to Ride Britt your army has your back and we all love you!!!!!!!

Where it all began;
2015 will be a year of challenges for the Poppleton/Hawkes family but will also be a year full of learning, growth, endless blessings and love.

Britton has been experiencing some pain in his right hip over the last several months, progressively getting worse. What was once a weekly pain treated by general pain reliever has advanced to a daily, unbearable pain. This resulted in a trip to the LDS Hospital ER on Sunday November 30, 2014, where an MRI revealed a large mass on his pelvis. This visit was quickly followed by many visits with Orthopedic Surgeons and Oncologists, all who have reviewed the scans. A biopsy of the mass was done Tuesday December 2, 2014. We knew at this point that the mass had compromised the bone in the area but it was unclear if it originated in the bone and then metastasized or if the mass itself started to invade the bone. The oncologist shared with us at that time that the biopsy is only to determine what type of cancer not to determine 'if' it is cancer.

We spent the week in many procedures and bone scans. Friday December 5, 2014 Britton's lead Oncologist Dr. Jodie Miles asked to meet with us as she had some limited results on the biopsy. Britton has been diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma Cancer. We wont know what stage until later in the process. The good news and silver lining is that the bone scans and CT scans of his lungs came back clear, this means it has not metastasized or spread and is now being referred to as a "localized" disease. We knew this was incredible news. Britton will have many appointments over the next week to prepare for the next steps. This week we will be meeting with the Chemotherapy and Radiation oncologist. Britton will also have a series of additional tests and procedures to prepare for the necessary treatments, these will include placement of a port in his heart artery for the chemo, an EKG, and a bone marrow biopsy to determine that this has not spread into the bone marrow. We anticipate following all of the testing he will quickly start radiation and chemo. The plan is to shrink the tumor to an operable size. It is very close to a lot of nerves and located in his pelvis. With its current size taking it out at this time is not an option.

We anticipate his treatment to last over the next year. We wanted to create this group to keep our family and friends updated and also provide a place where we can share encouragement, love and support with Britton.

Britton is a remarkable young man.. he keeps his family on track with his upbeat, witty and encouraging attitude. When asked how he was feeling he said "well, doctors go to school for a long time to learn how to take care of this, right? so why should I be worried?" Britton and his family and friends are fully prepared to kick Ewing Sarcomas butt "literally"!!!
