Who are British in Portugal?

British in Portugal are a citizens rights advocacy group established to retain as many citizens rights as possible for UK nationals living in Portugal and the EU as a result of the 2016 referendum.

How does that help you?

We are fighting for you to keep your EU citizens rights, we inform you, we keep you as up to date as possible to help protect you and your future in Portugal.

How do we do that?

It involves answering thousands of queries, world wide as well as locally, on a daily basis from UK nationals lost as to what is required. We have taken thousands through the no deal/withdrawal agreement process whilst speaking to the Portuguese and UK governments highlighting the issues for those living in Portugal, advocating for their rights. This involves attending meetings, phone calls, reports for Parliamentary Select Committees, speaking with MPs, amongst many things, to negotiate and discuss the best way forward for each and every UK national who is or wishes to reside in Portugal and consequently the EU.

As British in Portugal is under the umbrella of British in Europe, Tig James, co-leader of the British in Portugal team, is also the British in Europe representative for Portugal. This involves constant communication with the British in Europe steering committee who are negotiating with Michel Barnier and the UK Cabinet regarding UK nationals rights. In addition, British in Portugal is affiliated to EU in UK groups and liaises with them as to the current situation. Therefore, on occasion, have represented, not just the 60,000 UK nationals in Portugal but the 400,000 Portuguese in the UK too, as well as the five million jointly affected across the UK and the EU.

The nub of it?

We are a team of volunteers. We are not funded by any government body or institution and any costs to supply this help are borne by ourselves.

The past, present and your future?

In the past we have been very kindly offered help by a number of people to help cover some of our costs. To help us protect your present situation and your future would you do the same? We are all in this together, we need to protect our futures as much as possible and we need to fight to retain and gain as many rights as possible, to continue living in the EU as we have been doing before Brexit.

How much is your future worth?

We think it’s worth quite a lot.
