#GFMScholarship
Last April, the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) offered me a 4-year scholarship.

I was excited but also concerned. Excited, because it has always been my dream to pursue music at one of the top conservatories in the United States. And, I would be studying under the guidance of Ms. Joan Kwuon, a renowned violinist. Concerned, because the offer is not for a full scholarship and would, therefore, require financing that I cannot afford.

Tuition at the Cleveland Institute of Music is $47,200 a year. Room and Board for the year is $8, 775. The current scholarship grant is $26,000 for this year.

I am asking for your help so I should tell you about myself.

I am 20 years old. I attended the Philippine High School for the Arts, a secondary school that gives full scholarships to artistically gifted children and adolescents. I have just graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science degree, major in Statistics. I come from a family of mathematicians who also love music.

I began my personal journey into the world of music at the age of 6. My older brother played the violin and I wanted to be like him. Unfortunately, our parents could not afford to buy another violin, or send two kids for violin lessons. A year later, I finally got my own violin and the opportunity to take lessons. I have not stopped playing the instrument since then.

Following are some of my small achievements:

2011 - 2nd Place in the Philippine National Competition for Young Artists

2012 - First Concert Master of the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth

2014 - 3rd Place in the Euro-Asia International Competition in Malaysia

2015 - Awarded full scholarship to participate in the Alpenkammer Musik Festival in Austria.

2016 -Recognized as the Exemplary Awardee by the Philippine League against Epilepsy

2016-Was chosen to be the winner in the VSA International Competition chosen from about a hundred other applicants. Performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC on May 27, 2016

VSA stands for Very Special Arts. It is a competition for musicians with disabilities, ages 14-25. I have epilepsy, from the age of 10, but I have never let this disability hinder my passion for music.

We are not people suffering from Epilepsy but rather we are people living in the midst of it. As humans each of our bodies may have cracks but our soul is whole and that the only disability in life is the lack of perseverance.

One of my main goals in life is to help expand the current El Sistema program in the Phillippines which uses Classical Music to change the lives of underpriviledged youth by empowering them. Being one of the products of this system I saw before my eyes the power of music change lives and the incredible potential of this project. This is one of the main reasons I was determined to pursue my passion and taking a huge risk.
