These first-aid kits I’m raising money to make would be just a small act to help out the people of Jamaica. These kits will include location-specific treatments like aloe and bug spray but also modern-medicine treatments like Advil and Neosporin. They will also hold a small manual to tell the user about how to properly utilize the resources in the kit and about proper health habits. The kits will be hand-crafted and brought to Jamaica by me at the end of May 2025.
The Jamaican medical system has been shaky but getting better over time. Access to medical care is low, with many Jamaicans lacking insurance, meaning they cannot rely on public hospitals. Private health care costs are not affordable for the average Jamaican. The hospitals that are public are often too far away for most Jamaicans to access. The hospitals they do have access to are lacking in resources, outdated, understaffed, and the knowledge on how to care for NCDs, like cancer or diabetes, is very limited. Medical education is also lacking, and proper diet and exercise are not taught to people.
I became inspired to help with medicine in other countries on an outreach trip I took to the Dominican Republic in 2022, where I got sick and couldn’t be adequately treated because of the lack of access to medical care in the Dominican Republican and other countries like Jamaica. This issue is discussed very rarely here in the United States because it’s an issue us Americans don’t have to worry about. Please consider donating and contributing to my cause!
