On May 12th, 2018, I almost graduated from North Park University.

Hold up, Lisa. “Almost” graduated? Didn’t you do a bible reading at baccalaureate? Didn’t you carry the South African flag at Commencement? You were wearing a cap and gown and a bajillion honors cords. I saw you!

Yes, I did participate in the May Commencement. But, life took an unexpected turn which has resulted in this GoFundMe page.

For the past couple of months, I have been battling a chronic disease. I had been managing it really well when suddenly, two weeks before graduation, my health rapidly deteriorated and I landed up in hospital for eleven days. Because of my time in hospital, I missed finals week and had to take “Incompletes” for three of my five subjects. I’m currently working on finishing those three subjects and expect to complete them soon, after which I’ll be graduated. Of course, this has thrown a spanner in all of my plans for work in the summer, too.

Now, it would be OK with me if my struggles ended there. But they don’t.

You see, once I was released from hospital I was actually supposed to undergo at least six weeks of further treatment. But because I was NOT under any circumstances going to miss out on the celebration of FOUR YEARS of the hardest work I’d ever done, I opted to delay treatment so that I could participate in commencement. I also decided to receive treatment back home in South Africa, because it would be a tenth of the cost of treatment in the USA.

Now here’s where the paw-paw hits the fan: visa issues.

Oh, how I love US immigration and visa issues (said no foreigner, ever)! To cut a very long story short, I have to come up with US$410 before the end of the weekend, plus US$1225.78 within the next few weeks, to ensure that I’ll be allowed to reenter the USA once I’ve exited to receive treatment at home (and I’m leaving June 6th: next week!). The exact reason is a long story (which I’ll explain to you upon request), but for the sake of your time, I’ll get straight to the point:

There is no way that I can afford this on my own. In other words, I can’t afford to reenter the USA. In other words, I don't have enough money to come back to this place where I've formed strong friendships, created a loving family, achieved my wildest dreams...this place that has become my home.

That was a lot of info thrown at you at once, so here’s a summary:

·       These past 4 years, I’ve worked damn hard at achieving big things as a student, athlete, leader, friend, daughter…I’ve tried to glorify God in all I do, here in Chicago, my second home.

·       I made big plans toward getting into med school, many of which involved doing stuff in Chicago this summer.

·       This semester, I experienced chronic health issues which disrupted all of my plans.

·       These same issues almost prevented me from walking at commencement (thank God they didn’t!).

·       I urgently need to go for more treatment back home in South Africa (because, you know, staying alive and getting better is kind of important).

·       Because of a set of very complicated visa issues, I won’t be able to reenter the USA once I leave for SA on June 6th unless I come up with $410 by the end of the weekend, plus $1225.78 within a few weeks.

·       I won’t have that money by the end of the weekend without help.

With that said, I would like to enlist your help. What I need right now is for a blatant miracle to happen. I need to raise $410 in three days, and then a further $1225.78 in order to reenter the USA after going home for treatment next week. Please pray for these specific amounts. Also, please pray for God’s continual, gracious provisions in your own life, so that you can discern how best you can personally help out, too. A few ways you can help are by praying for me, sharing my page, and giving to my page.

Those of you whom have known me for a while know that this isn’t the first time I’ve been in dire distress. I’ve had my fair share of woes, and yet, through them all… God has done exceedingly abundantly above all that I could ask for or think of. I’ve been put under crumbling pressure, yet God has never failed me. He has seen me through multiple instances of financial distress, health issues, two marathons, and four years of college completed in a cold city 8,500 miles from home. He will see me through this, too.

(And if you don’t believe in God, replace, “God” with , “The Universe”, “Good Vibes”, or whatever else you believe in, and replace “pray” with “think of/thoughts”.  I speak in terms of God and prayer because that’s what I believe in, but I welcome your beliefs, too. Please send all the positive energy/support you can in my direction. Every single bit of beloved help goes a long, long way.)

With that said, please pray for/think of the specific amounts of $410 plus $1225.78. Also, please share my page, and make a sacrificial gift to this cause, too. This is literally a dire situation, so every dollar counts!

Thank you for your time and support. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, queries or concerns.

Blessings,

Lisa
