Bring Bookstore to Bridgeport

Be involved in creating the bookstore you want!

Joe Judd and his family have moved to Chicago. The kids have been accepted into an amazing and perfect fit community orientated school that we can't wait to be a part of and now we want to bring our bookstore too! We'll need help getting it here.

Here's where the books are going: 3324 s Halsted. Chicago ,IL

Here's the tasks:

To move our 60,000 books and their bookshelves 200 miles from their current location of 706 Jackson Ave. Charleston, IL ( otherwise known as Bob's Bookstore) to 3324 s Halsted, Chicago and to fix up the space to function as a neighborhood bookstore.

Here's what we need : $15,000.00

60,000 books is a lot of books to move! One 3x8 bookcase holds about 25-30 boxes of books. We have about 200 bookcases filled with books. We know 300 boxes fit in a 15ft U-haul truck. We are estimating we'll need about 4-6 26 ft long trucks. We'll need to hire at least 4 strong people with good stamina to load and unload the boxes @ $15 per hour. We estimate it taking at least 8 hours to load and unload one truck. Last we'll have to fill them with gas. A 26 ft long Uhaul truck has a 60 gallon fuel tank and gets 10 miles to the gallon.

Combined we have 30 years of experience with bookstores. Our new space is raw and to make it a functioning bookstore we know we'll need to accomplish a few things... Lighting is critical in a bookstore. We'll need to purchase lights, fixtures and hire an electrician. We will need to remove old signage and put up new signage for the store. Our current counter/display case is too cumbersome to move. We will need to buy or build a new counter. Our current bookshelves are 5, 8, and 10ft. We will need to take them apart and rebuild them. We'll also need to add 12ft bookcases to utilize the height of ceilings in our new space. To do this we will need to hire extra hands for help with construction and installation. We estimate this to take at least 40 hours. We think it would take about $5,000 for the bookcases and labor and $5,000 for lights and signage.

What's in it for you? :

Anyone who donates will receive a limited edition "I helped move the bookstore" bookmark. When you make a donation of $20 or more you get a tote bag and when you make a donation of $50 or more, 15% of your donation will go towards a store credit. Sweet!

Here's why our bookstore works for you:

Our bookstore reflects the community plus the time and place that it's in. Our tradition of buying books from people in the area allows our store to morph into the store people want. We build sections and buy books you suggest. This provides you, the neighborhood, area, and city with a bookstore everyone loves and feels connected to. It is the people that create the bookstore. We just keep the books organized.
