<div><strong>About Fortune and His Significance:</strong>

<div>In the late 1700s, Fortune lived in Waterbury, CT, where he was enslaved by Dr. Preserved Porter, a local bone surgeon. Despite the commonplace nature of slavery during this period, Fortune's story stands out due to the treatment of his remains after his death. Rather than being laid to rest with dignity, Fortune's body became a subject for anatomical study by Dr. Porter. His bones were preserved, studied, and passed down through generations, even displayed in a museum, without any regard for his humanity or the wishes of his family.

<div>It wasn't until centuries later, in 2013, that Fortune's remains were finally given a proper burial, with a ceremony that acknowledged his life and story.
