Hello, my name is Abbie, and I am an anthropologist dedicated to empowering the indigenous communities in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Since 2023, I have worked in fundraising for education in the Mayan communities of San Pablo and Santa Clara, Lake Atitlan. With your help in the last campaign, I have secured funding for 30 backpacks with 1-year materials inside for school children returning to class after the holidays the end of February, 2026 . Thanks for giving, caring and sharing!

However, I want to do more for the education of the community as a whole. Therefore, I am launching a Christmas toy campaign to provide educational toys directly to schools in San Pablo, Lake Atitlan, ensuring that all the community's children, where 97 percent live in extreme poverty, can benefit because every child deserves the gift of learning through play.

While children in wealthier nations wake up to a mountain of gifts on Christmas Day, in Guatemalan indigenous communities, the focus is often on honoring Jesus’ birth with traditional foods like corn tamales and festive gatherings. Sadly, many of these children do not receive toys, and this stark contrast has inspired me to take action.

In my efforts, I've seen firsthand how much these children lack. Of the last three siblings I helped purchase shoes, none owned a single toy. This campaign will not only bring joy in the spirit of christmas and giving but will also foster learning and creativity among these bright young minds.

Research shows that play is critical for children's development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play supports cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being in children. Furthermore, studies indicate that children who engage in regular play have better problem-solving skills and improved academic performance. Yet, many children in indigenous communities lack access to these essential resources.

By providing educational toys, we can help children enhance their creativity, improve their learning capabilities, and promote healthy social interactions. With your support, we can give these children the tools they need to thrive.
