First in short : this is a gofundme for Sri Lankan stray puppy Dowa and all the collected money goes straight to saving her from a life on the streets. Anything helps<3
I promise to give back the money you all help me with to the shelters in Sri Lanka with monthly payments as soon as we are back on our feet, this way you have not only helped me get my pup home safe, but also helped many other homeless dogs and cats in Sri Lanka soon! I will provide transfer proofs!
The story :
We met Dowa (named after the temple where we found her) a few days ago when we visited the Dowa temple in Ella, Sri Lanka. There are so many dogs in need of help and love here, and we try to give food and water to as many as possible. But Dowa demanded more of me the moment we met.
I just sat down to check something and this puppy comes running over to us. She instantly found her way into my lap and began to play with my shirt. She had a huge tick in her fur, bitemarks from other dogs and she was very skinny, but so happy and so affectionate. She would follow us the whole time we spent in the temple, and any chance given she was up in my lap again. When we were leaving she crawled up in my lap one last time, and fell straight asleep, and my heart just broke. Leaving her there, alone with no company and noone to care for her, feed her and give her love, a puppy not much more than 12 weeks old who never knew love and safety... I could not stop thinking about her, alone looking for affection from any stranger she could find, only to be shoved away..
I spent the entire night with the vision of her going through the garbage next to that busy Street, so tiny and so alone, in my head. But what could we do? I knew adoption is very expensive, and to just take her.. Could we? Certainly we could give her to a shelter, donate money? But all the shelters seemed to be far away and when I called, noone picked up. It still would not give her her very own home with her very own humans.. Thinking of my mums dog and how much affection and safety he needs, And then this pup, all alone in the world, my heart just shattered.
We decided to go back and look for her and take it from there. I was afraid she would be gone. But The moment we arrive I see her there on the parkinglot running between cars. I ran up and straight away she came to play in my lap.
We didn't know what to do, just that we had to do something. So I called petexpress who my friend helped me find. They are experienced in bringing straydogs from Sri Lanka to new homes and handle everything, But it is expensive and we simply do not have the money. They picked up and told me they were in fact on their way to Ella from Colombo, maybe we can meet in an hour?
We wrapped her up, conflicted, what are we doing? Can we just take her? Does anyone care? Are we just bringing her with us to realize there is absolutely no way we can afford to truly help her?
She was so calm in my lap the entire way back, she fell asleep and for five hours she would not leave my lap for more than a few minutes of sniffing around, or to sit in my boyfriends lap. We had her with us the whole day while petexpress handled everything to be able to take her. They told us to decide during the day. We need to make one payment when we get home in a week. Another one in two months, and a third soon after, total 6000 USD. It is for all her shots, vaccines, quaranteen, flight etc.
They will keep her for three months to give her all the nessesary treatments and then she can come home to a real home with her own loving humans, experienced with dogs, and with her own backyard and forest and lake and a warm dry house with food and water and cuddles.
There was no way I could say no with her sleeping in my lap, finally safe. I said yes, and figured we will just have to figure out the money, anything we can do.
She is now safe with petexpress and I will make the first payment in a week. Anything truly helps, all your money will go straight to helping Dowa, and if anything is left over it will go straight to animal shelters in Sri Lanka. I will provide reciepts from petexpress, photos and videos whenever I can, and of course video of Dowa finally coming home to my lap again in a few months <3
I allways wanted to adopt, but never tought I would physically pick up the dog from the streets myself, but Dowa found me, and your help will give her, a straypup, a forever home <3
