Bring Christmas to La Carpio

To all of my friends in the United States, the UK and elsewhere in the world:

This holiday season you will return home to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or simply to be together with your family. You will relax in a safe and peaceful place, enjoy good food, and most likely receive presents. I will too.

Unfortunately not everyone has this privilege. This year my colleagues and I at Maximo Nivel are hoping to bring Christmas to 50 children from La Carpio – one of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods in Costa Rica.

Over the past year I have worked closely with community leaders and children from La Carpio, where we teach English and help at a local daycare. The neighborhood is infamous for poverty, crime and violence, but I have never met a group of people as kind, welcoming and generous as the community in La Carpio.  The children of La Carpio have profoundly affected my life, as well as the lives of many volunteers who have contributed to our work (for example, see a blog created by one of our previous volunteers - Kids Deserve More).

Just $2,500 will enable us to organize the following events for the children of La Carpio over the holiday season:

1)      A HUGE Christmas party

2)      A trip to the San Jose Children’s Museum

3)      Christmas presents for each child
