Ahmad Jawid has been officially certified as a refugee by the UNHCR.
School in Iran
Because of insecurities and unrest in his region, his father sent him with an uncle to Iran for school where he learned English. He always felt threatened there because he had no ID.
Since the age of 13, Ahmad Jawid (“Ben Afghan”) has lived with repeated threats to the safety of his family, his own personal freedom, and even his own life. He is Hazara, a persecuted group in Afghanistan.
When he returned from school in Iran and started to teach English to the local kids, it was rumoured he was teaching Christianity and the language of infidels.
After his workplace and family home were raided by the Taliban and his father and two young brothers were taken into custody, Ahmad was forced to flee Afghanistan .
The Taliban has since killed his father
In 2014 he headed for India, , then Malaysia, then Indonesia.
Five years as a refugee
He's now living as a refugee in Makassar where he receives about 90 dollars a month. He still loves teaching English and teaches two classes.
He has been released from detention. UNHCR in Indonesia has told the refugees not to be expected to be welcomed by any other country. He has now been there for five years.
HOWEVER, THERE IS HOPE
If you’re interested in joining a settlement team to bring Ahmad to Canada, please contact Richard Harrop, Laura Beth Bugg or Stephen Watt
As UNHCR refugee, Ahmad is eligible for Canada’s private sponsorship program.
PLEASE consider helping to bring Ahmad to a better life. Under the PSR program, we must raise enough money to cover Ahmad’s rent and living expenses for one year.
The total set by Canadian immigration is $16,500. That amount includes:
· 12 months of income ($13,200) for:
· Shelter: $7,008
· Food staples: $105
· Startup costs: $3,300
· Household needs: $300
· Furniture: $1,085
· Clothing: $385
As soon as this money is collected, it will be held in a secure bank account managed by Community Matters Toronto , a registered charity that will also serve as Ahmad’s official sponsor. When Ahmad arrives, the money will be disbursed under guidelines laid out by the Canadian government.
