Hi, my name is Joaquin Mattson Almanzan and I am the writer and director of "Bandwidth." I am a sophomore film and statistics double major at UCSB, and I am beyond excited to be able to bring this project to life. Everyone loves live music and I am no different, so the goal of this film is to portray music in both an onscreen and onstage display. The goal is to premiere this film at Reel Loud film festival.
THE STORY:
With only one hour to film their music video, the band must focus and push through all the tension and mistakes to get it done.
A band shows up to record their brand new music video. With only an hour in the space, they try a few times to record it, but keep messing up. They are running out of time to get this done and tensions are starting to get high.
Each time it seems a different member is messing up and no one wants to be the one to ruin it. Everyone wants to get it done and get out.
When the leader of the band messes up, one of the members snaps at him and he snaps back leading to a big argument. But they can’t be mad for long because they have to get this video done. In the end they get through the whole song.
The catch is that there is no diegetic sound within the film. Instead, the same band that is acting in the film will perform the music live onstage while the film is being screened. Essentially every time the band messes up on screen the band will mess up onstage.
Some of my influences include:
- Whiplash: A great film about music that does a great job of building the stress and tension that comes from performance and perfection.
- Uncut Gems: A film that displays feelings of stress and anxiety to their fullest in a very stylized manner.
- Dave, Season 3 Episode 2, “Harrison Ave”: A television episode that explicitly shows the stress and emotions that come with filming a music video. This episode’s strength comes from its long hectic shots that really elevate the tension in the scenes.
- Modern Baseball - Rock Bottom Music Video: One example of a music video doing the same thing switching back and forth between the “video” and the behind the scenes to highlight the hectic and chaotic nature of the industry.
