This fundraiser is to benefit Sophia, a bright young medical student who just found out she has a very aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia. Sophia is the daughter of Theresa Werba, a Beth Israel congregation member and choir member. Currently located in Arizona, where Theresa has joined her to coordinate her care, Sophia may need to travel to another cancer center in order to participate in clinical trials capable of treating the kind of leukemia with multiple genetic mutations with which she was diagnosed. Funds raised would help defray the cost of travel as well as assist with some experiences to bring happiness and lightness to a grueling treatment regimen.
