Now envision that space just appearing at schools, parks, local festivals, senior centers, and block parties all over Calhoun County. Imagine a team of passionate professional booksellers traveling to spread the love of reading while helping people discover new stories.
That space is exactly what we are creating in the form of a Bookmobile.
Calhoun County Is A Book Desert
We all know about food deserts but did you know that book deserts are well documented as well?
A book desert is an area where a majority of homes have less than 100 printed books. Exposure to 100 books and seeing adults model the behavior of reading have been shown to greatly impact a child's early literacy and language skills development.
Why we care (and why you should too)
We believe books serve two crucial purposes in our culture.
First, to expose people to fresh ideas, voices, facts and feelings
Second, to serve as mirrors with which to better see and understand ourselves and our worlds.
Of course, libraries are already doing some of this very important work and we will continue to be key community partners with several in our county. Unfortunately, barriers such as geographical location and membership requirements leave many members of our society without consistent access to books.
Running a retail storefront and being a for-profit business with a strong focus on serving our community has been a powerful catalyst for creativity that can’t be undersold.
We feel not planning new and fresh ways to help people discover and acquire books seems a form of civic neglect that may have serious consequences.
