Get Ready for a Cross-Continental Challenge!
Over a period of 8 weeks F P Hurley is taking on the challenge of travelling the distance from Bridgend to Bangkok- 6,060 miles in aid of local charity Gilfach Goch Community Association. We are going to attempt the distance by walking, running and cycling the distance over the coming weeks for a really great cause. Using Strava to record our activities, any running, cycling or walking activity that is tracked in distance will count towards the target.

Gilfach Goch Community Assocation- Promoting social cohesion and tackling food poverty during the coronavirus crisis.
Gilfach Goch Community Association (GGCA) is a frontline charity providing essential services within Rhondda Cynon Taf and the surrounding valleys in South Wales. The centre runs a wide range of free activities and groups that are needs led and focus on community involvement, personal development and the relief of poverty through food security.
Now more than ever, the charity is a vital lifeline for struggling families and vulnerable people living in the region. The effects of complying with COVID Regulations, which have been enforced by Joint Enforcement Teams throughout all South Wales Counties have without doubt, have a profound effect on everybody but especially those who were most vulnerable. The mental health and wellbeing of many has deteriorated and combined with the loss of life, instilled fear and widespread poverty due to business closures and job losses, the indirect results of the pandemic has already started to emerge and support will need to continue way beyond the pandemic itself.
GGCA provides vital community support through its many projects including its FareShare programme - a scheme which redistributes surplus food to charities who turn it into meals for those at risk of hunger and food poverty. As the devastating effects of the pandemic swept through the community, need for food has risen sharply and emergency funding from the Welsh Government enabled GGCA to rapidly scale up the amount of food delivered to anyone facing food poverty within the community. Each week the charity delivers food hampers, fruit and veg boxes and over 200 free hot meals to those in need. However, the emergency funding is set to end on the 31st March but the increased need for food will still be there. Money raised through Bridgend to Bangkok will help GGCA continue to meet this need and deliver fresh, nutritious food to people in crisis and at risk of hunger.
GGCA also provides a range of other services including disability groups, infant and youth clubs, help with employability and a befriending service for those feeling isolated and lonely. The centre recently had an outdoor log cabin built through funding raised by the organisation which will be used as an outdoor teaching area. To help make the most of the outdoor cabin, funds raised will also help GGCA purchase worktops, shelving, kitchen units and tools to help teach wood work and construction to all youth and disability groups. Based in a wildlife garden, the log cabin will form the centre of an outdoor space where community members can spend time forming new friendships and engage in activities designed to help improve their health and wellbeing.
At F P Hurley we want to step up and help GGCA provide vital support to people unable to afford the essentials. When the crisis ends, it will be down to the resilience and determination of frontline charities like GGCA to bridge the gap and continue to make a difference to struggling families and those in need.
