Brian's Guatemala Solar Mission

Donation protected
My close friend, Mike, has been traveling for several years to an indigenous Mayan area to serve on a medical team. They  work out of village clinics to serve this incredibly poor region of Guatemala. I've always wanted to join him, so I took the plunge.

I am not a clinician, so I contacted the organization he travels through for volunteer work that matches my skillset. I was introduced to a man with a passion to change the everyday lives of the poorest Guatemalans.

Power to the home is oppressively expensive to have just few lights and cell phone charger.  It costs nearly a third of their income to have a few lights in their home. And a third of their $2/day wages to charge their cell phone. If children are to complete school work at night, they need lights. If working adults are to find work or arrange for transportation, they need charged cell phones. In some cases, older children are taken out of school to earn money towards paying the power bill.

Marc, the man with the passion to change every day lives, researched an affordable solution. A single solar panel with two LED lights and a USB port for cell phone charging. He has installed several of these units already. After coming home, he committed to a goal of arranging for 1,000 of these units to be installed in this region. I am excited to do my part by installing 30 of these units during my week there.

The cost of my recent overseas mission trips has been offset by the generosity of people who know me and my heart for helping others. I know going to these areas is not for everyone, but helping others get there is a great way to support the mission. Travel, housing, food, and immunizations all add up quickly, so any help is appreciated.

God has given abilities to each of us to show our love for others and I feel blessed to use mine in this way. Thank you for reading about this opportunity. I'm thankful to have supportive people around me, especially my wife (Kristin), to put life at home on hold for a week.

I fly down on Friday, August 4th and return Sunday, August 13th. Please set aside time during this time to pray for me and the others serving with me. Pray for the opportunity to show God's love to people who will benefit greatly. Pray for hearts and minds to grown, especially mine.
