Brian Lawson, a South Bay native, arrived at work in Carson on Wednesday, August 8, 2018. About 20 minutes into his shift, his colleagues noticed that something was wrong. He began to shake and his eyes started darting around and rolling back in his head. He said he would be okay and that he didn’t want to miss a day of work. 9-1-1 was called and he was transported to a local hospital.

Brian woke up a few hours later with an excruciating headache. He was given aspirin and was then told that he was being discharged. He told the staff that he didn’t remember what had happened or know where he was. The doctor said he wasn’t “buying” that story. He was told that he could leave on his own or that security would be called. He was given 2 bus tokens and directions to his job address. The distance was approximately 7 miles.

He walked and got lost. He wandered confused for 11 hours. His hope was that he would recognize something that would trigger a memory as to where he lived. Somehow, he ended up at another local hospital and, thankfully, was admitted. He had suffered a stroke, lost his memory and thought the year was 2009.

After a few days, the hospital transferred Brian to a local recuperative facility for homeless individuals. He will be there until August 20 and then he will be put on the street. Literally.

Brian had fallen on hard times and had been living out of his car (which is still sitting in his company parking lot). He was trying to make enough money to get back on his feet and get an apartment.

Brian spent his free time doing ministry for others he would meet on the street or in the park. He took blankets to those in need. He didn’t have much to give, but he gave his time. A local church that he was a member of has shared this information with him.

Then this happened.

Brian has no memory of anything post 2009. He has just discovered that he is now divorced, his ex-wife has remarried, his daughter is grown, and that he was living out of his car. This is all shocking to him. He will also have to re-learn his job.

The goal of this fundraiser is to raise enough funds to get Brian whatever medical assistance is available to help him recover from his stroke and get him into immediate housing.
