I am a 26 year old undergraduate student studying Architecture & Environmental Planning at Morgan State University. I have been accepted to study abroad in the Fall of 2015 semester at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad within the Urban Design program. My current university does not offer study abroad through DIS, so I have had to venture out on my own to make this dream come true. This is an amazing opportunity, however, affording a semester abroad can be very daunting. The tuition, alone, at DIS is about five times more than my current tuition, which makes it impossible to afford based on my current FAFSA loans and grants. In this specific case, I need to have atleast $24,000 to attend DIS, which includes housing and tuition. Currently, I have about half of that ($12,000) but need to raise $18,000 to be comfortable while studying in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The program at DIS is not only beneficial to my personal career as an architect, but also to the architecture field as a whole. As our society becomes more and more urbanized, the need for smart, viable, and effective urban design is imperative. Urban design is a new type of architecture that incorporates not only the livelihood of a building, but integrates the surrounding context; from the city block to the neighborhood to the city as a whole. Copenhagen, Denmark is the poster child of great urban design, and the ability to study at DIS, while using the city as my classroom, is a once in a lifetime opportunity. By studying at DIS I am able to absorb, adopt, and apply the methods and strategies used in Copenhagen to the evolving urban fabric of cities within the United States and begin to merge successful urban design ideas into the architectural practices of today.
