In early November 2019, Brian Wear (known as 'Snacks' on the NASCAR broadcast circuit) was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer.
Brian started chemotherapy in early November and due to complications, had to have emergency surgery to repair a torn colon which resulted in the doctors rerouting his digestive system for an ileostomy port. After that point, he was sedated and in an opioid induced “fog” for much of the month due to all the pain meds he was on. This set him back at least a month of recovery time.
After a brief period of feeling good, following his release from a several months stay in the hospital, Brian’s cancer has returned. Because of that, he has recently undergone more intensive chemotherapy which, unfortunately, has not stopped the progression of his cancer. He is now a candidate for a clinical trial at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. To participate in the trial, Brian will need to cover travel and living expenses for an extended stay in Manhattan, near the hospital.
In the meantime, emergency room and hospital bills continue to mount, as do daily living expenses and he is unsure of what daily nurse care or home visits he might require once he does get home. Also, he will eventually require more surgery to permanently repair his colon and remove the ileostomy.
Many in his NBC family and the sports and TV production industry have already been extremely generous with donations and time taken out of their days to visit and uplift his spirits while in the hospital, but more help is certainly welcome.
Brian and his family know that everyone is coping with a new world and that work has been scarce for many. Coming together we can each show our continued support for Brian, as he has always done for each of us. Thank you for whatever you can give. It will be used wisely and with care, but the need is critical.
